Kevin Costner -- Waterworld on Ice
In a real-life Waterworld, actor/director Kevin Costner is set to reprise his role as The Mariner. In what is being dubbed Waterworld 2011: Waterworld on Ice, the Mariner is set to take on his newest and greatest nemesis, and this time it is not over a bunch of dirt.
All the hoopla is over a device developed by Ocean Therapy Solutions, Costner’s environmental company, which is geared directly toward oil spill cleanup. The technology centers on a centrifuge that is able to separate 210,000 gallons of oily water a day. This device was developed in response to the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster.
Kevin Costner Develops Oil Spill Cleanup Device
The Mariner bought the nascent technology from the government in 1995 and put $24 million of his own money into developing it for the private sector. He claims the idea that we lacked the necessary technology to deal with oil spills came to him when he got something stuck in his craw after that fateful environmental catastrophe. With the help of his brother Dan, The Mariner set about saving his present-day Waterworld.
The villain in this latest production is not Deacon, The Mariner’s arch nemesis as played by Dennis Hopper in theatrical Waterworld. No, it is none other than, cue the suspenseful music here … actor Stephen Baldwin. You might remember him from his Oscar-worthy performance in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas and his brilliant turn on the TV reality show Celebrity Mole.
Barney Rubble, AKA Stephen Baldwin, Battles Kevin Costner
Yes, Barney Rubble has stepped from the shadows, and he wants a part of what The Mariner has, namely money. In a battle royale, the two will soon face off in a courtroom near you.
Rubble claims that he and an undisclosed business partner — though my guess would be Fred Flintstone — were duped by the wily Mariner to sell their interest in the company behind the technology. Swooping through the Gulf on his famed boat, The Mariner fought off Rubble’s minions, who utilized paddle boats to harass our hero.
According to The Los Angeles Times, The Mariner is seeking to have the claims dismissed. Despite having a minimal impact on the Gulf Oil Spill, the machine is being dubbed “The Costner Solution” in honor of The Mariner and his revolutionary idea that we needed the technology in the first place.
