When Is the Best Time to Update Your Landscaping?
Warmer weather means it is time to bring out the lawnmower, weedkiller, and a host of other yard cleaning implements, but it is also the best times from updating your landscaping. Add to that the possible energy savings you could have with the right type of tree and shrub configuration, this is the perfect time to make the improvements to your yard.
Trees Can Be Key to Saving Energy at Home
Although you may have to wait a few years to start seeing the difference in your energy bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, “three trees, properly placed around the house, can save an average household between $100 and $250 in heating and cooling energy costs annually.” The shade provided by the trees and shrubs in summer also help reduce the effects of wind and snow in winter, giving your home a buffer from all inclement weather.
Landscaping's Effect on Energy Savings
Of course there are several elements that you need to consider when starting to evaluate your yard for potential improvements.
- Climate - As any gardener knows, different climates encourage different types of plants. A person living in Maine is not as likely to need shade because of summer heat, so the location and type of plants will be
very different from a home in Florida that will heavily rely on shade to reduce summer bills. Microclimate is also important; the directions your windows face, location relative to a hill or a body of water, or precipitation are potential considerations for maximizing your energy savings.
- Wind - Planting trees and shrubs that are hardy will be important in locations where strong wind may uproot flimsier and more fragile plants. Placing them in the right locations can also provide a very effective windbreaker.
- Water - Don’t just think about energy savings in your home, consider plants that will require less watering to help reduce your water bill as well. Since this has other implications, we will take a more detailed look at watering in our next tip.
